Wojciech J. Tycholiz

I hold a PhD in Economics (2022) from the Faculty of Finance and Economics at Wrocław University of Economics. Since October 2023, I have been an assistant professor at the Institute of Political Science and International Relations, Jagiellonian University in Kraków. I am also a co-founder and the current President of the Polish Centre for African Studies. Prior to joining the Jagiellonian University, I worked as a research fellow at the University of Wrocław and lectured at SWPS University in Warsaw, Poland.
My research focuses on development economics in sub-Saharan Africa, with particular emphasis on economic transformation, capital flows, the resource curse, inequality, and structural dependency. My work has been published in leading journals such as African Affairs, Africa Spectrum, African Studies Review, African and Asian Studies, and Third World Quarterly. Currently, I am the Principal Investigator for the research project “Wealth Gap and the New Middle Class in South Africa” (Opus 24, National Science Centre, Poland).
I have been a visiting scholar at different institutions including, among others, the University of St Andrews (UK), Stellenbosch University (South Africa), University of Oslo (Norway), Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal), and L’Università degli Studi di Roma (Italy). My fieldwork has taken me to countries such as Angola, Ghana, Egypt, Morocco, Namibia, Uganda, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia.
Beyond academia, I have worked with the Polish Ministry of International Affairs, provided consulting services to Polish businesses, and authored numerous reports on investment and trade opportunities in sub-Saharan Africa, including a series for the CEED Institute, funded by Jan Kulczyk.
My first name, in English, is pronounced /ˈvɔɪtʃɛx/ (VOY-chekh).
